Jackson gritted his teeth and drove the Agile’s engines to the breaking point. Those bastards would not fall back to Zenith, not on his watch. His rage translated to the rest of the Silden. The Fairy Queen pulled up alongside the Agile. The Departure and the Luminescent streaked ahead to hunt down the fleeing enemy.

Silden-manned fighter modules overtook everyone. They crept up on the retreating Krakzid and exchanged shots with them. The stolen Legion vessels couldn’t keep up, but Jackson didn’t care.

The Krakzid slowed their blind rush and tried to drop back behind the Silden fleet. They cut their speed, stalled, and let the Silden modules hurtle ahead. Then the Krakzid assaulted those Silden modules from the rear.

The Agile was too far behind to see what was really going on until Jackson caught up with the Silden modules. Then he realized what the Krakzid were trying to do. The Silden modules rocketed across the boundary into Zenith space first. The Krakzid held back and let the Silden fly headfirst into a posse of the Zenith Militia.

Jackson recognized the Militia ships instantly, but he had no way to communicate the situation to his former comrades. They saw Krakzid fighter craft hurtling at them, and they reacted accordingly. The Firebird took point and shot forward to intercept the Silden.

The Silden tried to correct and back off, but that only encouraged the Militia to attack with greater ferocity. Jackson saw instantly what was going on. Drive the Krakzid over the line! he ordered. Drive the Krakzid into the Militia guns.

The Silden responded with the speed of thought. The forwardmost Silden modules fell back. They retreated into Keteran space and left the Militia with nothing to shoot at. The Silden modules circled behind the stolen Legion spacecraft. Modules and Legion vessels fell into formation, and they all closed to drive the Krakzid across the boundary.

The Krakzid realized their predicament and spun around to face the Silden force, but it was too already too late. The Silden force advanced, pushing the Krakzid back one step at a time.

The Krakzid tried to stand fast on the Keteran side of the boundary, but the maneuver worked. The Militia ships left their positions and lined up on the Zenith side. They opened fire on the Krakzid and sealed the enemy in a death trap.

Jackson’s heart leaped when he read the names of the ships just a few lightyears away from him. Sugarplum. Druid. Firebird. Reflux. Forfeit. Grand Slam. Gorilla. Kelna. Jenny Wren. Warrington. Fossack. Tungsten. Pern. Chesterfield. Moonshine. Edenborough.

He knew almost every officer and crewman on those ships. Zenith gleamed so bright and welcoming just a short distance farther. He was almost home.

The combined Silden and Zenith fire detonated several smaller Krakzid modules. The last fighter craft and battle cruisers resisted as long as they could, but the odds were against them. If they stayed, they were doomed.

Without warning, they scattered. They streaked away in all directions, with no apparent pattern. The Silden modules screamed after them, but a second later, the Krakzid reformed into a deadly arrow formation headed straight for Zenith.
